My six week, 2024 maritime loop expedition was a great learning experience and inspired me to refocus my many passions and to formulate a life style option based on sculpture...one I can look forward to and move forward with!
2024...Maritime Loop Expedition
Next spring, after my teardrop trailer has spent the winter in storage, I will sell it to clear my way towards a more sustainable Sculpture Wagon concept. My four-seasons Sculpture Wagon will be a fully operational mobile studio made up of two distinct areas; a high tech video podcast studio in the front, where I can interview fellow artists, and a dedicated sculpting studio, where I can make some noise, towards the back. I will maintain my loft apartment in Quartier Montcalm, Quebec City.
THE ELECTRIC STEP VAN
The new stand-up height, parking-lot length, electric step-vans look very promising as the platform for my Sculpture Wagon. I expect I will need a good deal of 2025 to evaluate the available models properly(perhaps renting one for a few weeks next summer) and until there are more used electric vans available.
BrightDrop EV 600
There are several electric van companies, like Ford, Mercedes, and GM (Brightdrop), Xos, as well as Rivian and Canoo, offering all electric step-vans.
2025...My Sculpture Wagon!
The electric step van's boxy interior will allow me to use a professional up-fitter to fully insulate it for four seasons use as a permanent studio, add a bathroom, and clad the interior with maple plywood. Once that is complete and on an as-needed basis I will use regular household appliances, standard cabinets, and robust studio furniture to complete a budget conscious build; on my own.
Towards the back, I will Integrate my sculpting tools in an imaginative and efficient manner. There will be a stone-sculping table, an air compressor, a stone-cutting air chisel, a light-weight clay-sculpting stand. and a draw-up ...al fresco sculpting ramp off the back. A wet table and the equipment for cutting, shaping, and polishing microcrystalline quartz will fit in nicely. With time there would be a mobile kitchen and a hide-a-way murphy bed or a Happijac Lift that lifts the bed into the high ceiling
Towards the front, I will create an efficient, sound-dampened video podcast studio based on Riverside software. I want to remain as simple and as mobile as possible, so, I will do most of my video work with my gimbaled iPhone 16 Promax. Of course the front will also serve as a social area when the podcast equipment is stowed. I will add Star Link for communications and additional solar panels on the roof; to top up the batteries.
